Virgil van Dijk: Netherlands defender consoles official after game
It is understood the 38-year-old official had discovered his mother had died in the build-up to the match.

And the Liverpool defender showed his human side, embracing the emotional Hategan at the final whistle.

"That man broke down, stood with tears in his eyes because he had just lost his mother," Van Dijk said.

"I wished him strength and said he had refereed well. It's a small thing, but I hope it helped him."

Fair play

"""Good to see he’s kept some of the class and morals he learned at Celtic""

He would not have learned those qualities from fans of Celtic, who, in my experience have precious little of either quality. Well, none in fact.

Yeah, it was years ago - so long ago, in fact, that my mother was a widow longer than she was a wife.

We all cope in our own way - my work that night meant that I was largely alone, visited once every two hours by the guard on patrol.

It put me in the comfort zone of what I'd been trained to do and also gave me time alone to work things out, but it's such a personal thing that I couldn't possibly say it would work for anybody else.

I took van Dijk actions as a simple statement that, despite his wealth, talent & price tag, he's still a human being.

Fair play to Virgil.

But I do hate these type of stories that hype up players actions when all they do is act like what any normal human being would do.

It's almost like the media try and heap praise on them for being normal.

Fair play to Van Dijk, and sorry for your loss Mike.

We all grieve in our own way, had similar when a death in my family and everyone was telling me take time off etc, actually the last thing i wanted to do, work kept me occupied and i came to terms far better i think, did a few benders after work mind....and the liver took a hammering!!! but rather than mope around at home with fuck all to do and people calling to say how sorry they are etc.

Sorry for your loss Mike mate

It is best to keep occupied as much as possible.

When I lost the old man 20 years ago . I went crazy in the gym training like fuck took my mind of him and put the pain into what I was putting myself through

That's pretty damn shit Mike.
Hope you carry on coping.

Don't be naive how did Van Dijk know the ref's mum had died?

It was a calculated gesture and the only humane act here is that it was done at the end of the match and not the start.

Feelings - don'tcha just hate 'em?

Clever ploy to curry favour in the most cynical way. He won't be getting a penalty against him from that ref ever.

Mike

Sorry to hear that mate, and yes, I understand having been there, where you are coming from - respect

I would say though, you will need some private time, when it's right, to let it go, and by fuck let it go

Best wishes, never a good time but at this time it makes it worse

Sorry to hear that, Mike
Everyone deals with these things in their own way.
I’m probably in your camp, took the call from Aust that my Dad had died (he had been sick for a long time) and didn’t even think of telling work

Bravo you, everyone has different ways of coping a close one's death, none are wrong

Fuck all to see here.

I got back from a weekend away to hear on the Monday afternoon that my dad had died. I was scheduled to work that Monday night so did, and let HR know the following morning.

Everyone went ape-shit-you-need-a-break-ape-shit, so much that I had to insist that they shut the fuck up, and I'd be working the next 3 nights as per my schedule. My way of coping.

Death happens.

Possibly a welcome distraction for him, bruuuno. He might have had 90 minutes or so without thinking about it.

Humanity is not dead, but how is that news ?

Sign of the times maybe because their is less of it around?, but I still believe it is not all that diminished, although when I come on here and read some of the posts I can't lie I am slightly worried.

Re: Virgil van Dijk: Netherlands defender consoles official after game
How the fuck he was able to carry on I don’t know. I suppose we do funny things when we’re in shock

This shouldn't be news.

Because it shouldn't be exceptional

Refereeing an international match sounds like an alibi to me.
When was the mother discovered dead?
